I don’t care how perfect someone’s life looks on Instagram or how organized their Pinterest boards are, we all get stressed. And while some of us feel it more than others, it’s important to know how to cope with it in a healthy and mindful manner so that on the days that nothing’s going right, you don’t blow up on your parents/boyfriend/husband. Thank me later!
1. Stop, drop, and breathe.
Stop everything you’re doing. Put down your iPhone. Put down your pen. And close your eyes. Even if you just sit there taking normal breaths, you’re already doing something for yourself. Take it to the next step and take 3 deep breaths, then slowly open your eyes and feel the relaxation.
2. Journal the deets.
For some people relieving stress might mean talking to a friend or partner, but I always find it best to journal first. Whenever I’m in a stressful situation, like dealing with a deadline and no motivation to work on it, I’ll get out my little red journal and write. I’ll write about what I’m feeling, why I’m just not in the mood for anything, and how I can help motivate myself to get up and at it. A journal may not be a one stop shop for the answer, but once your thoughts are clear it makes the situation feel more manageable. Magic.
3. Baths. Really, really warm baths.
I’m a sucker for hot baths and this is one exception to my “in under 15 minutes rule”. Sure, you can get it done in 15 minutes if you wanted to, but 5 minutes in you’ll want to just lay there forever. Start a bath, pour in a lavender bath gel, and take 5 deep breaths before you let your mind wander.
4. Organize the closet.
Cleaning up may be the last thing you want to do when you’re stressed out, but a lot of times it’s clutter that’s contributing to your stress. This may be the perfectionist side of me shining through, but even organizing a drawer in my closet or wiping down the countertops in my kitchen makes me feel better. The simple act of taking care of yourself and decluttering your space will relieve some tension.
