This is my first restaurant review on the blog and felt that Souen is a great first, as it’s a local spot in New York and serves very clean and wholesome meals!
I, like many girls out there, am always looking for a spot that I can depend on for a healthy meal with natural ingredients. I was a very lucky girl to find Souen on a walk around East Village about 8 months ago, and have been ordering from there ever since. Souen is a cozy macrobiotic spot located on 6th st. near 2nd ave. It focuses on providing healthful, organic meals that are made simply and deliciously. They are free of meat (there’s fish though!), dairy, and refined ingredients.
What kept me coming back here was the fact that, 1) everything truly is prepared in the cleanest way possible and 2) because no matter how clean it is, it’s still so flavorful. I seriously have an obsession with their kabocha squash and tahini dill dressing!
I’ve tried a little bit of everything, but my favorites are the Macro Plate, Chef’s Salad, and Futomaki Roll.
Starter: Kuki-Cha Tea
Kukicha Tea is a tea made from the twigs and stems of the Camellia sinensi tree. It’s rich in Vitamin C for immunity and great for digestive issues.
Main: Futomaki Roll (Pictured above)
This is my go-to when I’m craving sushi. It’s a nori-wrapped brown rice roll with watercress, burdock, carrot, and avocado. This is the most energizing choice with complex carbohydrates in the brown rice, omegas in the avocado, and tons of vitamins and minerals in the veggies. I love this one!
Dessert: Black Sesame Cookie
This cookie is made out of brown rice flour, almond flour, coconut oil, and all natural flavors. It’s a super clean cookie choice and packed with nutrients. Plus, black sesame is packed with Calcium and Zinc for strong bones and sugar cravings. Crunchy and great to end the meal
Overall Souen is a great spot if you’re into clean ingredients and whole meals. I’m a regular, since it’s close to home and really delicious. My biggest tip? If it’s your first time you must get the macro plate with tahini dill dressing!
