Good vegan restaurants are hard to come by, and when I say hard I’m speaking on behalf of NYC’s standards. If it were up to a non-New Yorker they’d be struck by the fact that we even have choices when it comes to dining animal-free. Although I’m not vegan, I do appreciate a good vegan meal from time to time and have spent enough time in New York to set apart the good from the bad.
326 E. 6th st. New York, NY
Souen is a whole food macrobiotic joint tucked away in the East Village on East 6th st. There are a few other locations, but this is the one I frequent as it’s close to home and has a very cozy vibe. Souen attracts hippies and health nuts alike and seems to be one of the few places in the city where you can get real food with great flavor. I wrote more in detail about the macrobiotic diet here.
My favorite: Macro Plate topped with extra vegetables and Tahini Dill dressing
2. Candle 79
154 E. 79th st. New York, NY
Candle 79 is an all organic restaurant located on the Upper East Side featuring a warm and intimate vibe great for dinner. This is one of New York’s original vegan restaurants and has tasty meals and desserts that you’d never know are vegan to begin with.
My favorite: Seitan Piccatta and Chocolate Peanut Butter Bliss dessert
3. Angelica Kitchen
300 E. 12th St. New York, NY
With so many items on the menu you might be overwhelmed at first, but rest assured that whatever you get will be delicious. This cash-only spot is overflowing with hipsters and trendy people on the hunt for their next plant based meal, whether it be the popular corn bread or coveted dragon bowl.
My favorite: Dragon Bowl with House dressing
4. Candle Cafe
1307 3rd Ave. New York, NY
Candle Cafe is Candle 79’s more laid back and casual counterpart. This is an easy lunch go-to with a cute juice bar and cozy seating area on the Upper East Side’s 3rd avenue. I frequent Candle Cafe to pop in for a juice, go for casual Sunday brunch, or to meet a girlfriend for lunch. It’s another no-brainer for vegan food.
My favorite: Aztec Salad or Live Salad with Tofu
5. The Butcher’s Daughter
19 Kenmare St. New York, NY
Trendy and chic are the only words I can use to describe The Butcher’s Daughter. You’ll want to Instagram everything on the menu from the kale salads to the tartines and fresh squeezed juices. The food here will undoubtedly make you feel light and refreshed, kind of like the rest of the fashionable people roaming around Nolita.
My favorite: Water Flower Juice and Smashed Avocado Toast
What’s your favorite vegan restaurant in NYC? Have you ever been to any of these?
