You’ve been hearing about them for years already, but you’re not exactly sure about what they are. Sound familiar? Thought so! Antioxidants are super simple to understand when you break it down. Anti. Oxidation. Oxidation, a natural process in the body, produces free radicals and these free radicals in too high of concentrations can damage cells and lead to decreased immunity, increased risk of disease, and the potential for premature aging. Below are my top 3 reasons why you’re better off including them sooner rather than later (and exactly where to get them)!
1. They keep you from getting sick.
The free radicals produced through oxidation come with an unpaired electron. This electron is constantly looking to pair with healthy cells leading to a never-ending cycle of free radical damage. Antioxidants come into the picture by providing the extra electron that the free radicals have been looking for, neutralizing cell and DNA damage. This keeps the body from having to deal with oxidative stress, which can lead to runny noses, sore throats, and body aches.
2. They shield you from cancer, heart disease, and inflammation.
Not only are antioxidants good for protecting you from things like the common cold, but they’re also important in dealing with big picture diseases. The older you get, the harder it is for your body to fight oxidation. The more antioxidants you’re consuming, the easier it is for you to prevent getting these diseases in the first place!
3. They keep you looking young.
It’s true, it’s true! Oxidative stress ages you on a physical level too. You can eat foods rich in vitamin E like sunflower seeds, which have been shown to slow the wrinkling process. Or you can opt for the external route and lather antioxidant-rich vitamin C or CoQ10 creams. These creams will work to block the free radicals in the air like pollution and sun rays.
Antioxidants are in so many of the foods that you kale-eating, green-juice drinking junkies (ahem, ALOHA!) are already eating aka spinach, apples, quinoa, almonds, etc. In addition to all these incredible foods, I’m a big fan of Bai’s Antioxidant Infusions to get my fix. They have such 10 yummy flavors and use exotic super fruits filled with nutrients, plus it’s sweetened naturally. My fave is Congo Pear. They also have a sparkling antioxidant infusion called Bai Bubbles! Can you ever go wrong with fruity infusions? I think not!
What’s your favorite antioxidant-rich food or drink?
